Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto give incredible, surprisingly transformative performances. This is an important story-one that I hope everyone will take the time to see on the big screen. At a time when gay rights are being threatened and contested in the majority of American states, we must reflect on how much indifference, cruelty and exploitation the LGBTQQI community has already faced.
My major complaint is that the film uses a homophobic bigot as an access point through which American audiences are meant to relate and see the error of their bigotry through the humanizing lens of illness. Also, the final “freeze frame” of the film was pretty confusing.
